A Photo Essay Featuring the Most Beautiful Colourful Cities in Cuba

with No Comments

Cuba is a country known for its vibrant culture, rich history, and stunning architecture. From the colorful streets of Havana to the pristine beaches of Varadero, there is no shortage of beauty to be found in this Caribbean island nation. In this article, we will explore some of the most beautiful cities in Cuba that are sure to captivate and inspire travelers from around the world.

During my last trip to the island, I steered away from the all-inclusive resorts to try something different. I decided to backpack across Cuba for two weeks instead of lounging on the beach sipping mojitos, haha. I discovered Cuba’s beautiful, colourful cities, and found a newfound love for the country.

Let’s delve into the beautiful colours of Cuba starting with the amazing capital city of Havana.

A GUIDE TO THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CITIES IN CUBA

1. HAVANA

Behold the capital city of Havana! If you want to experience a crazy amount of sights and colour then Havana is the place to be. While the historical center has been extensively restored, the outlying neighbourhoods are in different states of disrepair.

I find the colourful, dilapidated buildings give Havana its unequivocal character. I also love the natural patinas created by the various colours of the crackling paint.

I suggest spending at least two days in Havana with one day dedicated to simply wandering around aimlessly. You’re sure to find some incredible photo opportunities filled with colour!

Where to stay in Havana: The best neighborhoods for first-time visitors to Havana are Old Havana, Vedado and Centro. All three neighborhoods offer a wide range of accommodation and entertainment.

2. CIENFUEGOS

Cienfuegos
is located on the Caribbean coast in south central Cuba. Interestingly, French immigrants were the first to settle in Cienfuegos but it was eventually founded by the Spaniards in 1819.

The historical colonial center is one of the nicest in Cuba earning it a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. As pretty as the historical center is, I preferred the houses painted in pastel colors of pink, green and blue bordering the touristy center of Cienfuegos.

3. TRINIDAD,THE MOST COLOURFUL TOWN IN CUBA

Trinidad
is, hands down, the most colourful (and charming) town in Cuba! The endless rows of humble houses are painted in different hues of pink, blue and green. Trinidad’s colonial heritage is reflected in the perfect combination of terracotta roof tiles and cobble-stone streets.

Although this otherwise cozy town can become inundated with tourists, it still managed to retain its unequivocal charm. You can easily spend a whole afternoon just taking pictures of the pretty streets of Trinidad!

4. CAMAGUEY

Camaguey
is the cultural nerve of Cuba. As a result, many famous Cuban poets, artists and musicians come from this artistic town. The diverse architecture in Camaguey ranges from neoclassical to baroque to Art Nouveau and more.

It’s not unusual to see brightly painted, ornate facades alongside decrepit buildings (this is Cuba, after all).  As in other towns in Cuba, the colours vary from vivid to neon to faded pastels with each one as eye-catching as the next.

5. SANTIAGO DE CUBA

The colours in Santiago aren't as prevalent as in other towns in Cuba but it certainly shouldn’t be undermined. Once the capital city of Cuba, Santiago de Cuba played an important role in the Cuban Revolution which lead to Cuba’s independence in 1953.

Also, the vibe in Santiago is like no other in Cuba thanks to its African heritage. This Afro-Cuban influence transpires not only in the food but mostly in the rhythmic music which can be heard at every corner.

If you’re a rum enthusiast, you’ll be happy to know that the first Bacardi rum factory was established in Santiago de Cuba.

6. HOLGUIN

Holguin
was the first stop on my travels through Cuba. It’s a widely popular beach destination but I went straight to town, instead. Although Holguin isn’t as colourful as other towns mentioned previously, I did manage to find hints of colour here and there.

I like how these side-by-side houses added simple touches of colour by painting the contours of the doors in complimentary pink and blue.
