Finding Unexpected Street Art in Semarang

Who knew there was a thriving street art scene in Semarang? Prior to going, I didn't even know Semarang existed. Where exactly is Semarang? It's located in the north of Central Java in Indonesia. The rainbow village of Kampung Pelangi brought me to Semarang but finding unexpected street art was an added bonus.

Most of the street art in Semarang is in the Old Town of Semarang. This neighborhood is filled with dilapidated Dutch Colonial buildings and crumbling walls offering street artists lots of opportunities to display their art.

I did see a few artworks scattered elsewhere in the city so best you keep your eyes peeled. Since street art can be easily painted over by other artists' or the wall is at risk of being demolished, these exact artworks might not exist anymore. Good thing I was able to capture these while I was in Semarang.

As a fan of all things creative, I really enjoy writing posts on street art I come across on my travels. I try my best to give credit to the artists but I didn't have much luck in finding any information (despite the @tags). However, my ~~mostly~~ fruitless search did bring me to this Instagram account, 'Bring No Clan', featuring street art from Semarang.

As I searched for the artists, I realized I only caught a glimpse of the amazing street art in Semarang. There's a lot of talent in this small city! Have a look at the hashtags #semarangstreetart and #semaranggraffiti on Instagram where you'll discover a slew of incredible street art.
